SUSTAINABILITY AS A KEY DRIVER FOR INNOVATION AND TRANSFORMATION

Climate change has become one of the world’s most significant consumer concerns and increasing awareness around sustainability is starting to influence the financial services industry in multiple ways. Organisations are waking up to this and finding that the ESG conversation is broader than taking existing ‘green’ financial products and copy-pasting them into transaction services models. But what is the ongoing role of sustainability in the payment business? Is it to drive innovation, especially in the SME space (and if so, how)? Or are there other ways it is set to be a game-changer?

LEADERSHIP & CAREER DEVELOPMENT

WORK, LIFE AND HAVING IT ALL: ACHIEVING PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS AND WELLBEING IN A POST-COVID WORLD.

The global pandemic has caused many of us to re-evaluate our lives and careers. For some, this has meant complete career changes and radical readjustment to social and professional environments, while for others, a simple evolution. Regardless of our choices, one thing is clear: the desire to achieve good work-life balance has never been greater. In the past, prioritising this goal was often perceived as a detriment to professional success, especially for women in the workplace, who often felt they had to work harder to prove their worth or conform to societal expectation and stereotypes. The discussion looks at whether the “Doing it all” mindset been disrupted by the prolonged bouts of social distancing and remote working brought on by the pandemic. It will examine the impact on our sense of self and the way we think about work and what it truly means to have it all, while also shining insight on how women can pursue their careers in a way that is sustainable and rewarding in a post-COVID world.

Future proofing financial services – fintech continues to boom, offering consumers new and exciting ways to buy, save and give money. But are we keeping up with the changes that are needed to support the latest technologies within the global financial system?  Especially with the growing popularity of digital currencies, the connected economy, the rise of Web3 and all the mobile apps rebuilt on decentralized blockchain technology. Historically there’s been a lack of infrastructure for regulators and banks to test the proper framework for these kinds of services. What can we do to keep up with the pace of innovation and to mitigate risk along the way for consumers and businesses alike?

NOBODY LEFT BEHIND: OVERCOMING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the shift to digital first lifestyles, including using digital payments to buy and sell things. There have been decisive, permanent shifts in the way people work, shop, and interact, and this has created fantastic opportunities. But there is another side to the story. This shift has, at the same time, worsened inequalities, digital poverty and exclusion globally. Many individuals and families are still excluded from financial and other essential online services, and struggle with accessing and developing the digital skills and confidence needed for them to truly benefit from the digital economy.

As the world now turns its attention to the recovery and building back a fairer, more inclusive society, this talk will explore how digital payments technology and innovation will continue to provide an essential foundation for the economy.

DEFINING YOUR UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION: THE JOURNEY TO BOARD MANDATES

The boards of payment companies remain largely dominated by men. To achieve gender equality, it is imperative that women have a clear sense of their added value for a board alongside an effective strategy to find the right mandates. This session helps women to clarify exactly what boards are searching for in independent directors, and how to define a unique value proposition as a candidate. It will explain how to establish expertise in the market and how to brand, network, and prepare for the interview so that women do not just find any mandate but the one that is best for them.

BUY NOW PAY LATER: THE NEXT ENGINE OF GROWTH FOR PAYMENTS

Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL)is one of the fastest-growing trends in Payments today, fuelled by high demand, favourable consumer perception, an accelerated shift to digital payments, among other factors. For consumers, more retailers offering this option has been a delight and is driving a much-publicised shift away from traditional credit card spending. However, as the current BNPL structure and propositions can create an unfeasible debt load on consumers, increased regulation and oversight are likely. This panel explains the lesser-known aspects of BNPL and its uncertain future.

The financial services sector has one of the largest gender pay gaps in Britain and one of the lowest levels of female representation in the boardroom. Despite the endless discussion around the benefits of gender inclusion, most women are still unable to break the glass ceiling at the very top of the pyramid.  Pay.UK is an exception to the status quo and a hopeful sign that cultural change can happen. Half of the company’s C-suite is female and a Gender Pay Gap report has been published to keep salaries in check. The firm has also appointed it first Head of Diversity and Inclusion. In this important session Pay.UK shares the steps it has taken to encourage women to join the industry and its collective journey towards making the future of financial services a more equal place for all.
